Charting New Paths: Denisse’s Story of Science, Struggles, and Self-Discovery

Denisse Alexandra Diaz’s story begins in Puerto Rico, where she was born and raised as an only child, surrounded by a large extended family. From a young age, Denisse was drawn to the world of science. Her curiosity and determination set her apart, and she always felt a natural inclination to solve problems and explore the unknown. It was this passion that guided her through a series of life-changing decisions, each leading her closer to her dreams, even when the path was unclear.

Her journey into the scientific world began with a significant opportunity right out of high school. She participated in a research program that allowed her to do internships both in Puerto Rico and the United States. This exposure to the world of scientific research solidified her passion, leading her to pursue a Ph.D. in molecular microbiology from Tufts University. This was just the beginning of her adventure, one that would take her across borders, through academic institutions, and into the heart of the pharmaceutical industry.

After completing her Ph.D., Denisse joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Maryland, where she was eager to learn and make a name for herself. However, this chapter was marked by unforeseen challenges. Denisse had moved her entire life for this opportunity, only to find that it was not what she had expected. The promises made to her during recruitment turned out to be hollow, leaving her disillusioned and questioning her choices. “I felt that people hadn’t been completely honest with me. I moved my entire life because of this opportunity, and it wasn’t what I was told it would be,” she recalls.

Despite the disappointment, Denisse made a bold decision to leave the lab. It was a risky move, but one that taught her a valuable lesson: no one would advocate for her but herself. With the support of her husband, who encouraged her to follow her instincts, she drove to the lab one day and told her supervisor, “I’m here to tell you in person that I’m never coming back.” It was a moment of empowerment that marked a turning point in her career.

Shortly after, an old friend and fellow scientist reached out with an unexpected proposal. He had a vision for a new biotechnology startup and wanted Denisse to be a part of it. “He came to me with a crazy idea and 18 months of funding. I knew he was an amazing scientist, and I trusted his vision. I saw it as a unique opportunity to build something from the ground up,” Denisse explains. Although the offer meant straying from her initial goal of becoming a professor in Puerto Rico, she took the leap of faith. Seven years later, she is still with the company, now serving as its Chief Operating Officer.

Denisse’s journey has not been without its challenges. As a woman of color in the biotech industry, she often finds herself in rooms where she is the only one like her. “Being a woman of color is lonely,” she admits. “There aren’t many of us in these spaces, and it can be difficult to connect with others on a personal level.” Despite these challenges, she has built a strong support network of friends and mentors who have helped her navigate the complexities of her career and identity.

One of the most defining moments in her journey was when she was invited to give an alumni speech for the Biomedical Science Careers Program. It was a prestigious opportunity, speaking in front of a large audience of executives and students. But as she began her speech, she was overwhelmed with emotion. “I didn’t want to cry, but as soon as I started talking about who I am, I lost my voice. I was so mad at myself for crying in front of this crowd,” she recalls. What she saw as a failure turned out to be a powerful moment of connection. To this day, people remember her speech and tell her how much it resonated with them.

Denisse’s vulnerability, both in that speech and throughout her career, has been her greatest strength. “My superpower is my feelings,” she says. “Showing vulnerability allows others to see themselves in your shoes. It makes people root for you, and it helps build trust.” This philosophy has guided her in her leadership role, where she strives to be a kind and supportive mentor to those around her.

Reflecting on her journey, Denisse credits her success to the unwavering support of her husband, her mentors, and the strong sense of self she has cultivated over the years. She believes in the power of perseverance and the importance of defining one’s own non-negotiables in life. “I need to see my family every year. I need to be there for my husband’s important moments. These are my non-negotiables,” she says.

For those following in her footsteps, Denisse offers simple yet profound advice: “Don’t be afraid to take risks and don’t be too hard on yourself. Do everything with conviction, even the things you don’t enjoy, because you never know when a random opportunity will come your way.”

Denisse’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to her values. She has navigated the labyrinth of life with grace and courage, always staying true to herself and her passion for science. Her journey is far from over, and as she continues to break barriers and build a legacy, she remains a beacon of inspiration for those who dare to dream big and defy the odds.
